Mothers, just as in everyday life, often appear in the visual arts in a caring role. The art-historical prototype of the mother who feeds and protects her child is the Virgin Mary, whose depictions shaped the image of motherhood for centuries.

On the occasion of Mother’s Day, however, we encounter not only her. We also get to know Maria Theresa—the highly influential ruler and mother of sixteen children—along with the family crowded into Bertalan Pór’s tiny apartment in Józsefváros. And on this special holiday we do not forget about grandmothers either: we recall the grandmother lovingly immortalized by József Rippl-Rónai.

We invite moms and dads for a guided tour to enjoy art with their one-year-old or younger babies. As museum educators and mothers alike, we have found that there are few museum programs that appeal to new parents. So with these guided tours we create an atmosphere in which no one is embarrassed by a crying or hungry baby.
